Z+S Predicts: The TOP Interior Design Trends 2023
Organise + design your Reno with these resources
Interior design trends are constantly changing and shifting… simply because they’re inspired by so many factors — especially architecture, fashion, art, technology, current events and social movements. Fashion particularly plays a leading role in home design trends, with the colours and styles we see on the runway this season often ending up in our homes the next. So, what do we predict will be the biggest 2023 home interior design trends? We can sum it up in 5 words — Wellness with POPS of Colour — and here’s how it will look in our homes…
Biophilic Design
You may have heard the word Biophilic Design being mentioned — it’s not a new concept, but it has gained popularity in recent years and we think that’s about to accelerate. Biophilic design is an interior design approach that brings nature indoors. It involves using natural elements like plants, natural light, and organic materials to create a connection with the outdoors and promote well-being. It's a hot trend in sustainable living that can create a calm and inviting atmosphere in your home while also improving your overall health. Incorporating biophilic design elements into our homes has especially become popular in interior design since the COVID-19 Pandemic, as we’ve become acutely aware of the importance of creating homes and spaces that promote physical and mental well-being. There’s a reason this one is our top 2023 interior design trend.
Sustainability + Eco-Friendly
Wellness goes hand-in-hand with one of the biggest trends in interior design right now — the focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness. This trend is reflected in the use of natural materials, such as natural stone, timber, natural fibres like jute and hemp, materials like wool and linen, as well as recycled or repurposed items.
Natural materials not only promote wellness in our homes, they also often outlive the lifespan of their synthetic rivals. Take a quality timber coffee table for example — it can be up-cycled, re-stained or re-vamped and unlike many man-made materials, will decompose rather than ending up in landfill or our oceans.
Minimalism
Minimalism, or as we like to call it; less is more, celebrates clean lines, neutral colours and simple shapes. This style emphasises function over form and prioritises simplicity and functionality. This design style also promotes wellness, as it encourages us to declutter, create white space in our homes, and most importantly, buy less “stuff” that we don’t need and is bound to end up in landfill sooner rather than later.
Colour Trends
We need to add personality and balance to our minimalist homes, and one of the big 2023 interior design colour trends that will do just that is the addition of bright, bold colours in soft furnishings, art and accessories. Deep shades of blue, green, pink and warm tones like burnt orange will take centre stage this year. These colours are a great way to add personality and interest to a room, and when combined with textured surfaces like VJ panelling or a shag pile carpet — really provide the perfect elements for a balanced and harmonious home aesthetic. This is one of the decorating trends for 2023 that we expect to take off as people dare to add more warmth and personality to their homes.
Multifunctional Spaces
As homes continue to get smaller and more of us work from home, creating multifunctional rooms, and clever zones and taking advantage of under-utilised space will be big on our interior design agendas. This can include things like turning a guest bedroom into a home office or incorporating a kitchen island that doubles as a dining table. This home design trend is ideal for those who don’t have lots of space to work with, in small city apartments or who have downsized their homes.
This design trend also goes hand-in-hand with integrating storage and features like built-in desks that can be hidden behind closed doors when not in use. Integrating and planning storage that serves a specific purpose also works to create order in our homes resulting in more organised and calming spaces.
Tech-Savvy Design
Get ready for smart homes that are even smarter! Integrated technology like voice-controlled and app-controlled lighting and climate control is becoming commonplace, making our homes more comfortable and efficient. Solar panels are literally on everyone’s agenda, and homeowners are looking for more efficient and eco-friendly appliances, like induction cooktops and energy-saving smart thermostats. We’re also paying more attention to the longevity of materials, and opting for new, tech-savvy design and building products that can outlive traditional options, for years to come.
Outdoor Living
Outdoor living is a home design trend that’s seen a lot of growth in the past few years. As people spend more time at home and suburbia expands around us, outdoor spaces in homes are becoming GOLD. From balconies to patios and backyard decks, outdoor living areas are being designed to extend the usable living space and provide another way to connect with nature. By maximising foliage, greenery and natural materials in these areas, your home’s liveability is increased exponentially. Plus pops of greenery always makes a house feel more relaxed and homely.
