It’s natural we’re looking to add matt finishes in every aspect of our home designs, including solid surface basins.

Because for quite some time, matt surfaces have been the preferred choice over gloss, throughout our home designs. And with their flat finish and smooth silky feel, there’s really a lot to love about the finish and style of solid surfaces!

But what are solid surfaces? Are they practical? How do you clean them, and how much maintenance is required? We put this seamless basin finish to the test and were surprised by the results…

What is a Solid Surface?

Solid Surface products are formed by mixing a mineral compound with acrylic, epoxy or polyester resins. This makes them very strong and durable and gives them a natural stone-like feel. While usually finished as a matte white surface, solid surface products are also available in a range of colours and finishes. You may also hear Solid Surface products referred to as stone resin, composite stone, cast stone, mineral stone or engineered stone.

The Benefits

Unlike Ceramic, the surface of a solid surface basin is not brittle or fragile, making it very difficult to crack or break. This makes them a very durable and long-lasting alternative.

Solid surfaces retain heat better than acrylic or cast iron and are available in a range of shapes, sizes and profiles.

After a seamless look? Solid surface basins can be moulded from the same piece that’s used to form the benchtop, for the ultimate in minimal design. This results in a join-free seamless solution and can negate the need to engage a further trade, such as a stonemason, making it friendly on the hip pocket too.

The Cost

So how much can you expect to pay? It is common to find Solid Surface options priced the same as a gloss version of the same basin. But as with anything - you get what you pay for. Cheaper alternatives can be made with inferior resin and use cheap fillers. This can result in a basin that may yellow or crack over time.

So do your homework and purchase from a reputable brand to avoid headaches down the track. A mid to high-end solid surface basin will maintain its colour and look just as good in years to come as the day it’s installed.

High Maintenance?

Similar to natural finishes such as stone, Solid Surface products can be slightly porous. This means they require higher day-to-day maintenance to ensure they remain to look their best. Spills of makeup, oils or tanning products need to be cleaned promptly to ensure they don’t leave a lasting impression.

That said, we’ve lived with Solid Surface basins in our homes for years, and find them no more maintenance or effort than any other basin.

The Cleanup

One of the biggest advantages of Solid surface basins is that they can be sanded and polished to buff out any marks or scratches. A once-over with fine grit sandpaper can be just the ticket every few years, to leave your basin looking brand new.

As for regular cleaning, a slightly abrasive creme cleanser such as ‘Jif’ can keep it looking its best week after week or your basin may come with a special scourer or sponge to assist with regular cleaning.

Is it worth it?

Having lived with Solid Surface basins for over 3 years now, we can say that we’re completely converted. The matte white finish and a huge variety of stunning profiles mean that Solid Surface is our go-to for basins - and when budget allows, baths too.

Can you mix and match?

A common question we’re asked is whether solid surface basins need to be paired with matte or solid surface baths and bench tops. While a great match, it’s definitely not mandatory. A matte finish bench top will certainly work well, as will opting for matte finish tiles; however as long as your colours work well together and your style is cohesive, it’s absolutely possible to create a space that works beautifully whilst mixing these finishes.

So our verdict? Solid Surface basins are as practical as they are beautiful, and definitely get the Z + S trick when it comes to maintenance and cleaning.
