Top 7 Interior Design Trends For 2024
It’s 2024 and home design fever and interior design trends have hit new heights… and this is why.
If you’re thinking it’s due to social media like Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok, and TV shows like The Block, you’re right… Put simply, now more than ever, design ideas, home DIY information, and interior design inspo are available at record levels and easily accessible by anyone.
Each year, there are a few standout interior design, renovation and building trends that take center stage. Last year, it was all about home design with organic curves, Venetian plaster and warmer tones... For interior trends 2024, think — designing with wellness in mind, mixing interior design styles, and you guessed it — more organic lines.
Here are our Z+S predictions for the top interior design trends for 2024 that you need to include in your new home designs.
1. Japandi Design
‘Japandi’ is a portmanteau of Japanese + Scandinavian. It perfectly combines the aesthetics and functionality of Japanese minimalism and Scandi simplicity. With clean lines, neutral colour palettes, and emphasis on natural materials, Japandi design is all about creating a serene and uncluttered environment. You can easily incorporate Japandi interior style into your home whether you’re building from scratch, renovating or just restyling.
Z+S Tip: Look for materials with natural texture like timber, stone and soft linen, and opt for low-line furniture for a relaxed, peaceful vibe.

2. Biophilic Design Trend
Interior design trend number two for 2024 is without a doubt — the biophilic design. What is it exactly? It’s the style of designing homes with nature in mind, either through the architecture and building itself, or creating opportunities to incorporate nature and living elements that flows seamlessly within or around the home.
We often talk about how a connection to nature at home is important for wellness, and this interior design trend takes it to a new level. From incorporating skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows to capture a green view of natural light and gardens to designing an internal courtyard around a centuries-old tree, the possibilities are endless for biophilic design in 2024.
3. Soft Curves
Sofas, kitchen island benches, walls — you name it, they’re all being designed — curved. This has been a popular interior design trend for the last few years, and will stay high on design agendas in 2024!
Like our first two interior design trend predictions, incorporating curves in any space — from your kitchen and bathroom to living spaces — results in a more relaxed aesthetic and instantly makes homes feel more comfortable and Zen. And Science backs this up! Psychologists have proven that curves in interior spaces reduce anxiety, and stress and promote feelings of well-being. So curves and rounded finishes not only look good — they’re good for us too.
4. Smart Homes
The recent advances in AI, Internet of Things (IoT), robotics and home technology are making our interior environments and the world we live in ‘smarter’. These technological advances will continue to level up and make their way into our home and building designs, and integrate and communicate with each other to streamline home management and chores.
This year, we predict to see much more fully integrated smart home tech, from speakers to control devices and lighting in every room to touchless doorbells, high-tech home workouts and fridges that sense you’re low on milk — instantly adding it to your digital shopping list. We’re excited to see all of the new home automation and integration options that will roll out this year, making our homes more functional, and easier (and more fun!) to use and manage every day.
5. Natural Stone + Porcelain Benchtops
For years, engineered stone benchtops have been one of the most utilised and cost-effective stone options in the interior design and building industry.
Recently, an Australia-wide ban means that 2024 will see builders, renovators and DIY design enthusiasts looking for benchtop alternatives. Z+S predicts that, despite the additional cost, porcelain and natural stone benchtops will rise in popularity, while new engineered silica-free options will likely be developed over the coming years.
Porcelain benchtops and natural stone are both premium surfaces with a range of benefits. Porcelain is generally hardier, more stain and heat resistant of the two, while natural stone has the benefit of no two stone slabs being the same — so you can select the piece you love, with completely unique veining, texture and tone variations — allowing you to create a completely customised design.
6. Customisation
Home designs that are customised to their homeowner, their lifestyle or a buyer's target market include attention to detail and planning of spaces that maximise functionality, storage and usability.
Customisation will continue to grow in 2024 — with integrated furniture, features like wall lights, wardrobe lighting, and floating or integrated storage increasing in popularity and demand. The extra time and effort that goes into designing and planning these features pay off big time when it comes to both aesthetics and function and furthermore, customisation allows you to create room designs that precisely suit your personal style and the way you live and work.
7. Modern Mediterranean
Have you noticed this interior design trend creeping onto your Pinterest feed? We’re talking terracotta tiles, archways, plaster walls, fluted cabinetry. It’s the Modern Mediterranean style and it will continue to dominate as a top interior design trend for 2024.
The appeal comes from its simple, organic neutral style dominated by whites, creams and warm peachy tones, which suits a variety of homes and relaxed interior design styles. What really adds that extra punch is the combination of materials like smooth plaster next to handmade textured tiles and rattan feature lighting; each adding character, classic colour and uncomplicated style, to create a Modern Mediterranean home aesthetic.
