1. Classic Coastal Style
A coastal kitchen colour scheme brings the relaxing and uncomplicated vibe of a beach house into your home. The timeless combination of white and timber joinery, wooden flooring or timber-look tiles and wooden bar stools, creates a calming, laid-back feel.
To achieve this look, incorporate white kitchen cabinetry with white wall paint, and features like open timber shelves or panelled or shaker-style cabinets. Then add lighting in natural materials like rattan to add texture and understated style. In one of the kitchen designs below we’ve opted for brass taps and cabinet handles to add warmth and contrast, however, brushed nickel, gunmetal grey or stainless-steel tapware and hardware would work equally well.
Z+S Tip • We’ve built, developed and renovated for profit for over 15 years, and Coastal style homes and colours have always been the most popular schemes amongst buyers! Coastal kitchens have a relaxed, airy aesthetic and are a great home style choice if you’re building or renovating to sell.
2. Scandi Grey With Pops of Black
Scandinavian kitchen design is known for its simplicity, functionality, and soft aesthetic. You can see this reflected in our own Scandi Kitchen Colour Scheme.
The pale grey cabinetry works in harmony with timber floors with grey undertones and pale grey painted walls, while bold black lighting fixtures and handles lend a dramatic contrast. This kitchen colour scheme beautifully fuses modern minimalism with cosy yet refined appeal, creating a space that's both inviting and stylish.
3. Modern Hamptons White and Grey
Nothing says timeless elegance and luxury like our Modern Hamptons Kitchen.
A contemporary Hamptons-style kitchen is characterised by a predominantly white colour scheme, and grey bench tops and is accented with eye-catching polished chrome, brushed nickel, or brass tapware or faucets. Lighting, fixtures and accessories should then pair or complement the kitchen tapware and cabinetry. To add a traditional Hamptons design element, the clean, crisp white cabinetry should feature a shaker profile.
In our Hamptons project below, we opted for a slimline shaker cabinet to give this kitchen a contemporary edge and used brass taps, lighting and features which contrast beautifully to create an aesthetic that's both warm and sophisticated. If you're drawn towards classic designs with a contemporary twist, this could be the ideal colour scheme for your kitchen.
4. Marble and Grey Minimalism
Our Retreat House Kitchen Colour Scheme featuring light grey cabinetry, white marble benchtops and matching splashback is both contemporary and minimalist in design.
We opted for timber flooring and feature shelving to add warmth and a more relaxed aesthetic to this home and kitchen space, however, you could easily substitute the wooden floors with grey, white or black floor tiles for a more minimal design. The subdued grey tones pair beautifully with the luxurious white porcelain bench tops and backsplash, while the timber flooring has a warm, grounding effect. This kitchen colour scheme is an excellent choice for achieving a clean, streamlined, yet impactful kitchen design.
5. Contemporary Black, Grey and Timber
Nothing makes a bold statement in your home like black cabinets, lighting and features.
Our Fifty Shades Kitchen Colour Scheme combines black, grey, and hints of timber elements to create a sleek, modern and eye-catching kitchen scheme. The neutral tones are timeless to ensure a colour combination that will outlive ever-changing interior design trends. To make sure your kitchen colour scheme remains warm and inviting, make sure to include timber elements such as floating shelves and real timber or hybrid timber flooring, to balance any cool grey and black tones.
Z+S Tip • Planning spaces for your home that feature predominantly black or dark cabinetry or paint? Include large windows and plenty of natural light, to achieve a space that feels light and inviting.
Tips For Planning Your Kitchen Colour Scheme
When it comes to planning your kitchen colour scheme, there are key factors to consider:
Cabinetry: Often the most prominent feature in the kitchen, your cabinetry colour will set the tone for your overall kitchen design. The colour you choose should ideally align with the style you want to achieve – whether it's classic, contemporary, or minimalist.
Benchtops: Benchtops are another significant element that contributes to the look and feel of your kitchen colour scheme. Materials like marble or engineered stone come in a huge range of shades, textures and patterns. Z+S Tip • Always compare a sample of your kitchen cabinet colour to make your benchtop in natural light to make sure they’re a good match.
Tapware: It’s often overlooked, but tapware can make a big impact on your kitchen colour scheme. You create seamless cohesion or add contrast, by choosing a tap colour that complements your cabinetry, any accessories and overall kitchen style. For example, black tapware for a minimalist kitchen or brushed chrome for classic, timeless appeal.
Paint Colours: The colour of your paint and walls can greatly influence the mood and overall aesthetic of your kitchen. Lighter colours can make a smaller kitchen appear larger, while darker colours can add depth and drama.
Lighting: The colour and style of your lighting fixtures play an integral role in your kitchen's colour scheme. Choose a finish that complements your chosen colour palette and pair it with other features in the space, like cabinet handles, tapware, window frames, furniture and accessories.
Furniture: If your kitchen includes a dining area, your furniture selections should feel like an extension of your kitchen design. Take inspiration from the materials and colours used in your cabinetry, benchtop and other finishes and repeat them throughout your kitchen or dining room to create a cohesive design.
Appliances: Finally, don't forget about kitchen appliances! Whether you opt for integrated appliances or keep them proudly on display, make sure to select the right size and style of appliances to suit your needs and kitchen layout.
The perfect kitchen colour scheme is one that reflects your personal style while also complementing the overall design of your home. Whether you're leaning towards a classic Hamptons kitchen or a minimalist Scandi design, we’ve got a Kitchen Colour Scheme to help you nail your new kitchen design.
